The first systematic review of related research has confirmed that a Mediterranean diet — high in olive oil, fish, fruits, and vegetables — has a positive impact on cognitive function.
In recent years, much research has found a link between adhering to a Mediterranean diet and a reduced risk of age-related diseases such as dementia. Now, this systematic review of this research confirms the connection.
The team analyzed 12 eligible research papers, 11 observational studies, and one randomized control study. In nine of 12 studies, higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet was associated with better cognitive function, lower rates of cognitive decline, and a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease.
However, results for mild cognitive impairment were conflicting.,
